Olive Oil: The All-Purpose Remedy

by Valerie Gladstone — February 19, 2007

Olive oil is one of those magical substances that is good for almost everything--your diet, your skin, your hands and nails, and your hair. Prized for its cosmetic uses since ancient times, olive oil is relatively inexpensive and can be purchased in most grocery stores.

Use extra virgin, as brands labeled "pure" and "light" have been chemically processed. Because the oil's fat composition is very similar to that of human skin, it rarely causes allergic reactions. In addition, it's absorbed quickly and helps lock in moisture in the skin. The high percentage of unsaturated fat and vitamins A and E, helpful in preventing sun damage, also work on the outside to soothe and replenish, particularly sensitive skin. It is also pure, and unmixed with anything but water, unlike other oils.

You may find you love this elixir enough to buy an attractive storage bottle so you can keep it in the bathroom rather than dragging the big container out of the kitchen every night. And if you don't like the smell, you can always mix it with a little of your favorite hand, body, or hair lotions.

Cuticles and Nails

For ragged cuticles and brittle nails, soak your nails in a small bowl of warm olive oil (add a squeeze of lemon for a nicer scent). A few minutes' dunking can help brittle nails become more resilient and soften cuticles so you can safely push them back.

Hands

To soften your hands, smooth on a generous amount of olive oil before bed, put on white cotton gloves, and sleep with them on.

Lips

Dab a little olive oil on dry and chapped lips.

Hair

For brittle or overprocessed hair, Manhattan hair colorist Penny Errico-Nagar (Penred301@aol.com) recommends rinsing your hair after a shampoo with a solution of olive oil and egg (one beaten egg with 1/2 to 3/4 cup of olive oil) and leaving it on 30-45 minutes, covered with a plastic cap. She suggests weekly or monthly treatments, depending on the condition of your tresses.

To help thicken hair, Maurice Rodriguez, director of the Aveda Salon Spa, in Manhattan recommends soaking your locks in 1/2 to 3/4 cup of warm olive oil and wrapping them in a towel for 30 minutes.

Face

Whenever your face needs softening and moisturizing, massage a small amount of olive oil into your skin, applying extra oil to rough or cracked areas.

Body

Add a few tablespoons of olive oil to your bath water to soften skin. Essential oils, such as lavender or jasmine will provide a touch of fragrance to your soak.
Shaving Cream
Men with sensitive skin can use olive oil as a shaving cream.

Feet

To heal dry feet, rub them with olive oil, then put on a pair of socks at bedtime and leave them on overnight.

Makeup remover

Dab a little olive oil on a cotton swab or tissue to remove makeup. It's good as any drugstore brand at removing mascara.

Olive Oil as an Ingredient

Look for olive oil in lip balms, shampoos, bath oils, hand lotions, soaps, soaks for nails, massage oils, and dandruff treatments.

Where to Buy Olive Oil Soaps

Two good sources are Butte View Olive Oil Company and Blackberry Creek Soap. Others include Hunter Valley Soap Company, A Wild Boar Soap, and McEvoy Ranch.

My Italian Grandmother only used olive oil on her face and it was as smooth the day she passed away as the day she was born. I do the same thing and at age 61, I have minimal lines on my face and have been told I look like I am in my early 50's.

does olive oil help to reduce a bit of the fat around the tummy?

Posted by: pari | April 2, 2007 1:36 AM

Hey, Pari: We've never heard of olive reducing fat anywhere on the body, but check out our podcast next week (4.09.07) with Ori Hofmekler on the "anti-estrogen" diet. He has excellent suggestions for getting rid of belly fat.

Finally a solution for removing mascara! Even natural brands with no alchohol irritate my eyes. I am going to give olive oil a try for mascara and eye makeup removal. BTW I use Sweet Almond Oil on my body as you described using olive oil in this article; face, body, cuticles and feet. It really helps my skin stay smooth and soft, and my husband comments on this :) I also used to use an olive oil shampoo from Kiss My Face. I am not sure if they still make it. Thanks for a great article!

can i apply for black circle? olive oil good for eye

Posted by: hariharan.c | April 15, 2007 12:13 AM

I doubt olive oil will help cover dark circles but it is great nourishment for your skin and may give you a glow that makes them less apparent. Let me know if it works.

Hi! 2 weeks ago my hair begins to fall even if i don't comb it.I think it's bec. i was so stressed out bec. of my NCLEX-RN exam. But i already passed the exam and i think i'm not stressed anymore but still my hair continues to fall.I bought a multi vits.I tried olive oil just now and i plan to have it overnight on my hair.I hope it works coz i don't want to get bald.Pls. somebody help me.

Posted by: Alma | April 28, 2007 12:47 PM

Olive oil works great for the hair. My hair was falling out for months with a complete bald spot in the back. I only tried olive oil because I used it on my daughter when she had cradle cap. My hair stopped falling out and is alot softer. Putting it on after washing it and leaving it overnight does wonders.

Posted by: KMA | April 30, 2007 10:58 PM

Hair falling out may be a medical condition. Mine was falling out and a blood test reveled an under active thyroid. Those with this problem may want to check into this if the olive oil didn't stop their hair from falling out.

Another great site for olive oil related products is DHC.

I have had alot of trouble with my hair since feb-07.I got a perm and it wasn't what I expected so I decided to do a straighter and that just burnt my hair up now it's broke off and alot shorter than it was does the extra virgin olive oil really work?

Posted by: nay | June 10, 2007 10:25 PM

I'm not a hair expert but I should think the best thing to do is leave your hair alone for awhile and use only the mildest shampoos and conditioners, occasionally using olive oil as a conditioner. You didn't say whether or not you colored your hair but if you do, olive oil will take some of the color out. My colorist told me to use it only right before I go for color - maybe once a month or every six weeks. You might also ask a good hair stylist for a recommendation for a conditioner.

Good luck,

Valerie

Posted by: valerie gladstone | June 11, 2007 9:04 AM

Hi Eloise, I just checked with hair specialist Penny Errico-Nagar and she suggested you buy a protein treatment at a beauty supply store or online and also use a restructurizer once a week, until your hair gets back to normal.
Hope this works,

Valerie

I had repeated massive ear infections for two years untill it was finally discovered that i had developed some strange form of ecsema in my ear. the medicine we finally got to fix the problem worked, but so does the sweet olive oil you can buy in the drugstore and i bet you can't guess which one is super expensive and which one isn't?

Posted by: crystal | August 18, 2007 5:21 PM

I loved the info in this article. I told my children that I started using olive oil in my hair and they thought I was crazy. I am sending this article to them. I also started using it on my lips and as an all over body moisturizer. I will now start using it as a makeup remover. My hair was dry, brittle and falling out, but after just a few weeks of using EVOO on my hair it is now soften, supple and shining. I will use nothing else from now on!!!

Posted by: carmen johnson | August 27, 2007 10:14 AM

Well I can testify that Olive OIl is a very good product to use. I have experiment with it on an infected toe and it was healed, perfectly well.

Posted by: Angel | August 28, 2007 9:56 AM

Thanks for all of the information. I'd heard people say they used olive oil on their hair, but never paid the concept much attention. I wear my hair in dreadlocks and, it's hereditary, but my hair is thinning on top. The olive oil does a great job of stopping the breakage plus, my hair is shiny!

Posted by: Tamika | September 4, 2007 9:02 PM

I bought a product from cosco that has olive oil in all of it's face creams. My dermatologist told me it was plugging up my pores on my face. Has any one heard of this happening? I was very happy with the Costco products, but am leary of using them now.

Posted by: Alexandra Beckwith | September 13, 2007 6:44 PM

i'm going to check with a dermatologist and let you know.

Posted by: valerie gladstone | September 14, 2007 12:50 PM

i haven't found any reports that show that olive oil clogs pores. But why don't you stop using it for awhile and see if there's any change in how much your pores are clogged. and please let me know.

Posted by: valerie gladstone | September 15, 2007 12:06 PM

Hi, I have very dry and damaged hair since I blow dry everyday to make it look neat. Plz let me know if it is good to apply 'Dabur Olive Oil' or should i use some good cooking Olive oil?

Posted by: Luet | September 26, 2007 2:13 AM

don't know what dabur oil is. use the best extra virgin olive oil. you should also try not blow drying your hair every day. it's just making it drier. also leave a little conditioner on the ends. let me know how that works.

Posted by: valerie gladstone | September 26, 2007 12:59 PM

Trader Joe's has wonderful olive oil spray for frying pans..but I suppose one could spray on face or hair. Anyone ever tried it?

Posted by: Janet v. Inglefinger | September 27, 2007 4:18 PM

hello my skin becomes very dry and dark I want to use olive oil when to use and how and please send some soap name and cream which is good to normal skin. and how to reduce fat in stomach. Thank you. Waiting for your reply,
by brintha

Posted by: Brintha | November 1, 2007 2:53 AM

For dry skin, I would use any moisturizer sold by aveda (in shops or online at aveda.com) or oil of olay, which you can find at drugstores.

fat in your stomach means you need some exercise. if you haven't exercised before, start with taking long walks and taking the stairs instead of elevators. later, you can graduate to sit ups. any exercise website online or exercise book in the stores will show you how. you should also reduce fat in your diet like butter, cheese, ice cream, rich sauces, red meat and white bread and pasta. good luck. let me know how it goes.

I would like to know when to apply olive oil before or after a shower and if a spray would work after a bath.

Posted by: bijoy | November 9, 2007 1:38 PM

can u use goya cooking olive oil on ur face n hair? pls help

Posted by: sonia | November 11, 2007 12:21 PM

I'm sure olive oil would be good to apply after a bath or shower - but not too much and not if you're putting on nice clothes right afterward because it might come off on them.

sonia: i'd only use extra virgin olive oil on my face and hair. one thing to remember about using it on your hair - it takes a lot of rinsing to get it out.

Posted by: valerie gladstone | November 11, 2007 10:38 PM

Yes...it's true. If you put too much Olive Oil in your hair when you are trying to condition it, it takes about 3 shampoos to get that greasy feeling out. One way I think EVOO is well used is in a home facial scrub. Take 1 Tbs of sugar or salt and 1 Tbs of EVOO and mix well. Rub on your face in circlular motions (taking care around the eye area) and then rinse with warm water and a wash cloth. It does a wonderful job of removing dead dull skin and what is left after rinsing is unbelievably soft dewy skin.... you will love it!

I love your Article!

Posted by: marianne | December 7, 2007 3:27 AM

thanks. did you try any of ways to use olive oil? i just recently bought a small dispenser for olive oil to keep in my bathroom, rather than taking the big bottle back and forth to the kitchen all the time.

Posted by: valerie gladstone | December 8, 2007 2:57 PM

Can you use olive oil for fine lines around the eyes? I can't use anti-wrinkle creams.

Posted by: elizabeth | December 8, 2007 11:14 PM

hii.. my hair is falling too much and its very damaged also its burned because of using the hair dryer in addition iam stressed... is olive oil enough or i have to put also castor oils and almond oil ? thanx

Posted by: razan abu - jazar | December 21, 2007 7:02 PM

How often should you use olive oil on your face and how long do you leave it on for? Does it clog pores, make you break out in pimples? Is it good for lines around the eyes? Thank you

Posted by: wendy crisp | January 2, 2008 7:54 PM

answering elizabeth. it sounds like you need some good advice from a hairdresser you trust. olive oil is not enough to solve all hair problems. you probably need some deep conditioning. certainly wash less, use less soap, and use a hairdryer as little as possible.
answering razan. you can use olive oil on your face. it won't clog your pores. try different times, starting with 5 minutes and, if all goes well, work up to 15. also good around the eyes.

An aunt of mine is in her late 50's, and does not have a single grey or white strand of hair (and its not bcoz she colors her hair). According to her, the reason is that she had been using olive oil in her hair ever since she was a teenager. So heres another reason to use this wonderful oil ...

Posted by: Sadaf Sami | January 8, 2008 8:02 PM

my daughter is 2 and a half years old...i have started putting olive oil on her hair ...
should i buy the olive oil from a chemist shop (like superdrug) or from a grocery shop(like sainsbury) ?
should it be extra virgin olive oil?
will it be good to use olive oil for life long for my child on her hair....i mean i have mostly read that olive oil is good for damaged or dry hair..is it good for maintaing healthy hairs and scalp, good hair growth ?

Posted by: anuja | January 9, 2008 9:02 PM

I have a terribly dry scalp. It isn't dandruff, but if I scratch it, it becomes flaky. Will EVOO help if put on the roots/scalp for me? Thanks!

Posted by: Stacey | January 18, 2008 3:24 AM

A friend of mine with very dry skin was told by her physician to take tablespoons full of oil to counteract that dryness.

Perhaps taking it internally might be the answer for some of you with very dry skin and hair.

Posted by: kris | January 20, 2008 8:57 AM

i'd buy the extra virgin olive oil at the grocery store - don't have to be an fancier than that. Though it is good for hair, i wouldn't use it all the time - maybe every couple of weeks for general health.

for very dry scalp, it would be best to ask a trustworthy hairstylist what's best. if it continues, talk to a dermatologist.

hello!! I previously decided to go from blond to my natural color since I am in nursing school. The process of course was done at a salon and it took three process to get my hair to a pretty brown. The color was shocking at first but I managed to kinda like it. My hair feels great, and I want to go back blond. How long should i wait before doing highlights. I've started using olive oil and it has made my hair softer.

Posted by: Ruchi Jagpal | March 5, 2008 11:01 PM

I don't know if olive oil is at Walmart but it is most grocery stores. yes, it's the same olive oil that one uses for cooking.

Posted by: valerie gladstone | March 7, 2008 5:04 PM

I love this article! This is particularly enlightening for me because I have thin hair strands and brittle nails. I will start putting olive oil on my hair. Thanks for the advice!

Posted by: cindy | March 29, 2008 12:24 PM

Thanks for the info. and i want to tell all of you people a great thing. that olive oil has uncountered benefits. not only regarding to skin and hair but many other problems also. and if anyone knows that in Islam, the olives have too much importance. It is a very pious tree. You people can get not only physical but spiritual benefits also. Thanks again

MY HAIR IS VERY DRY, AND SO IS MY SCALP, BUT OLIVE OIL WORKS WONDERS. IT IMPROVED THE HEALTH OF MY SCALP AND THE OVERALL TEXTURE OF MY HAIR TREMENDOUSLY.IT ALSO WORKS FOR MY DRY SKIN. I SWEAR BY IT.IT'S MY ALL PURPOSE BEAUTY PRODUCT, AND MY BEST KEPT SECRET...SHHH

Posted by: DOMINIQUE BROWN | June 6, 2008 6:54 PM

Olive oil works wonders! I have been having really dry itching scalp (i don't think it was dandruff... just dry) and have applied olive oil to my hair and scalp at night and sleep with it on overnight using a shower cap. Simply amazing, my scalp is no longer itchy and my hair is sooo soft, shinny, and hydrated. I am also using it now on my face and have replaced my commercial moisturizer with it. The olive oil makes my face glow, hydrated, and silky smooth, it so much better than regular store bought moisturizer.

Posted by: Steve | July 30, 2008 12:32 PM

Hi, my hair is/has been thinnning and heard olive oil was good for the hair through forums like this... so I started using virgin olive oil on my hair and leaving it on overnight and then shampooing in the morning to wash it out. My hair feels so much better and seems fuller. I am glad it did this. Does anyone else have similar results?

Posted by: david | August 17, 2008 11:26 PM

Also olive oil is great to kill head lice. It is a safe and healthly way. Fully cover all hair good. Then take a plastic store bag and wrap up hair. Add paper towles all around to get drips. Leave on head for 8hr. it will kill all bug. But wont kill the eggs. you will have to get them out as soon as done. But the hair is soo soft that the eggs seem to come out much easier. And it is all done safely for your child.

Posted by: winter | August 22, 2008 12:39 PM

I ONLY USE OLIVE OIL ON MY SKIN NOW FOR THE PAST 2 MONTHS.I WOULD NOT USE ANYTHING ELSE ON MY SKIN.I HAD FINE WRINKLES ON MY FOREHEAD I DONT SEE THEN ANYMORE.
