A New Face for Fall

by Valerie Gladstone — September 17, 2007

Ever since I was a kid I've loved fall. I like it when things cool off and leaves change color and there's a chill in the air. And although summer has its own pleasures--the beach, fresh fruit and vegetables, casual clothes, and long days, I find fall more exciting when there are more dance, music, and theater performances here in New York, with shows opening and new restaurants to try, and friends returning from their vacations. I also like winter clothes and the more sophisticated look that goes with cooler weather.

Makeup people have a few ideas about how to change your look, this year suggesting going from tan to wan for an intense, dramatic look that's currently popular with designers:

  • Start by sparingly applying a pale foundation like Nars Balanced Foundation in Mont Blanc ($40 at www.sephora.com). But remember if you have too much red in your skin or it's too dark, it's not going to look as natural.
  • Once you have a pale canvas, brush highlighter only on the cheekbones, forehead, and chin. DiorShow Powder ($40 at www.sephora.com) is a good choice.
  • Lips should be pale but not too pale--maybe a pinky beige cream lipstick like Flirt Chickstick in Cherub ($10 at www.flirtcosmetics.com).
  • Apply a shimmering white shadow on the center of the eyelid, sweeping it to the inner corner, and staying away from the brow bone. Givenchy Shadow Show in Star Diamond ($22 at www.sephora.com) would work.
  • Finish with just a little mascara--maybe brown.
