Green Cosmetic Shopping at Whole Foods

by Valerie Gladstone — October 24, 2007

I didn't quite believe it when a friend referred to Whole Foods as the Sephora of natural beauty (actually Sephora is full of natural beauty products so....) because I thought, well, the amazing store just had food. Wrong. Here are some terrific buys you can get at the store or at wholefoods.com. You might pick up some apples and oranges, as well, which certainly won't hurt your skin.

  • Dr Hauschka Cleansing Milk is rich in hydrating oils and contains bentonite clay, which picks up impurities ($33).
  • Suki Complexion Brightening Cream is a hydrating cream that fights discoloration with vitamin C and yeast extract. It also has cell energizing and oxygenating effects ($45).
  • Burt's Bees Lip Shimmer is a gloss that feels light with beeswax, grape-seed oil, coconut oil, cocoa butter, and Vitamin E ($3.70).
  • Avalon Organics Nourishing Shampoo is very emollient; it contains coconut, which has fatty acids. And oat betaglucan helps scalp irritation ($6).
  • Avalon Organics Bath & Shower Gel gives a good lather and contains emollients such as panthenol and aginine ($7).
  • Masada Dead Sea Salts' mineral content can stimulate circulation, soften skin, and helps psoriasis and eczema ($20).
  • Alba Moisturizing Cream Shave is a soap-free cream that prevents irritation, dryness, and even ingrowns. Jojoba seed oil and vitamin E are soothing and hydrating ($4.60).
  • ShiKai Borage Dry Skin Therapy Lotion contains borage oil, a source of gamma-linoleic acid, which is important for healthy cell membranes. Without it, you can get dry and flaky skin ($15).

What people are saying...

might as well pick up some carrots while you're there - probably as good as any cosmetic

I've seen Kimberly Sayer's products at the Whole Foods in New York. She was trained as an aesthetician in London, and her products are organic.

Good point about eating the fruits and vegetables! The late great comedian Slappy White once said "Beauty is skin deep, But ugly is clear to the bone." If you don't treat your insides right, you'll never look good on the outside
