Tousled Locks

by WiredBerries Editors — May 6, 2008

I'm trying to embrace my somewhat naturally wavy/curly confused hair. For years, I didn't consider my hair "done" if I didn't blow dry it. Left to dry on its own, it kinda has a bit of oddly placed kink and looks beachy in a limp sort of way.

I usually make sure my hair is washed and straightened before heading to the stylist (does anyone else do this?), but I was running late and ended up sitting in her chair, staring at my confused waves and apologizing for my unkempt look. My sweet, patient, and funny stylist explained that this look was all the rage and with a little tweaking, I could have the gorgeous low-maintenance waves of Kate Hudson and Gwyneth (I think I made a wise-crack about the "low-maintenance" stylists they use). Anyway, she trimmed and then showed me how to look a bit more polished sans blowout. I don't know if this will work for stick-straight hair, but I think it works for anyone with even a little kink.

When your hair is wet, towel dry a bit, then comb in a light product that will help ensure the waves stay without frizz - try a styling foam or a light mousse. At this point, I usually go to bed, but if I've showered in the morning, I just let my hair air dry as I race around getting ready for the day. Once hair is dry, use a curling iron to quickly curl one-inch sections in different directions around your head. I know this sounds high-maintenance, but it takes me about 3 minutes to do my whole head because you don't hold the curl for long. That's it. I let the curls loosen on their own as the day goes on. My hair looks neat but not "done." I'm so glad I found a stylist who finally gets me!
