Buff Up at the Beach

by Valerie Nahmad — August 4, 2007

Think the beach is all about tanning and lazing about? Think again--Men's Health turns beach day into a calorie-burning bonanza with this 15-minute workout. Trainer Robert dos Remedios recommends doing the exercises barefoot on a soft, flat area. Do two sets of each exercise, resting 30 seconds between sets and 60 seconds between exercises. Exercises are explained below, click here for photo illustrations:

  • Shuttle Runs--Make three parallel lines in the sand five yards apart. Straddle the middle line with your knees slightly bent. Move to the right and bend at the knee to touch the line with your right hand then run to the left and touch the far left line with your left hand. Return to the middle and continue until you've completed four runs to each side.
  • Sand Skip--Skip forward so that you're jumping and landing on the same foot. Leap as high as possible and do five skips per leg.
  • Squat Jump--Stand with feet slightly more than shoulder-width apart and lace your fingers behind your head. Bend knees until your thighs are parallel to the sand. Jump as high as you can, then sink directly into the next squat without pausing. Repeat five times.
  • Jump and Stick--Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart. Jump straight up, land on one leg with your knees bent, your shoulders slightly forward, and your hips and butt back. Steady yourself for two seconds, return to starting position, and jump again. Do four jumps per leg.
