Desperately Seeking Sports Bra

by Valerie Nahmad — August 21, 2007

Why are comfortable, supportive sports bras so hard to find? It seems like a relatively simple concept, but most women I know are still looking for the perfect fit. And it’s not an AA or DD issue—we’re all struggling. Self Magazine consulted LaJean Lawson, adjunct professor of exercise and sport science at Oregon State University and 20-year sports bra researcher, for some answers. Here are a few tips to take into the dressing room:

  • Smooth, substantial fabrics with less stretch reduce friction and prevent chaffing
  • Extra wide (at least 1-inch thick) shoulder straps improve cushioning
  • Higher necklines keep cleavage under cover
  • Two sturdy, unique cups that hug breasts close to the body will boost comfort
  • A broad, adjustable rib band provides additional back support
