Get Wet

by Valerie Nahmad — August 16, 2007

Summer is going quickly--fall sweaters and evening chills will be here tragically soon. Make the most of the waning heat with a water workout. Health Magazine breaks down the basics of rowing, canoeing, and kayaking (calorie counts are based on a 150lb woman):

  • Rowing--Burn 476 calories per hour and work your arms, legs, and core. Rowing is low-impact, highly effective, and relatively inexpensive (many boathouses offer free orientations).
  • Canoeing--Burn 238 calories per hour and strengthen your arms, shoulders, back, and chest. Canoes are relatively easy to maneuver (beginners should sit in front) and a slow pace make sit easy to chat and pass the time.
  • Kayaking--Burn 340 calories per hour and work your arms, shoulders, chest, and back. Kayaks can be used on calm or rough water and rental fees average $25 per half day, including life vests and paddles.
