New Fitness Guidelines

by Valerie Nahmad — August 18, 2007

The American Heart Association and the American College of Sports Medicine are at it again--meet the latest round of exercise guidelines for our (increasingly overweight) nation. The 2007 guidelines outline recommendations for healthy adults and update their 1995 predecessors. Click here for full details and read below for highlights:

  • We should get 30 minutes of moderate exercise at least five days a week or 20 minutes of vigorous activity three times a week

  • We should do 8 to 10 reps of 8 to 10 strength-training exercises twice a week

  • Aerobic activity is needed in addition to routine activities of daily life--housework and errand running don't count

  • Short bouts count--three 10-minute blocks of physical activity can meet your daily goal
