Get Out!

by Valerie Nahmad — September 18, 2007

Come Wednesday, getting to the gym starts to feel like a minor miracle, so during the workweek, take what you can get (30 minutes here, 30 minutes there), then kick your workouts up a notch on the weekends. Prevention inspires with five fat-burning activities:

  • Kayaking--Burn 340 calories per hour and sculpt your upper body, specifically shoulders, triceps, biceps, back, and core.
  • Hiking--Strap on your boots, head for the hills, and burn up to 400 calorie per hour. Hiking will boost your cardiovascular fitness while toning and strengthening legs.
  • Speedminton--Burn up to 400 calories per hour and sculpt "tank-worthy arms" with a competitive round (or three) of Speedminton. A blend between racquetball, badminton, and tennis, Speedminton works your arms, back, legs, and hand-eye coordination.
  • Cycling--Spin away between 500 and 700 calories per hour while building solid legs. Insider tip: bike shorts (flattering as they are) provide padding, wick away moisture, and prevent chafing.
  • Inline Skating--Rollerblading burns over 800 calories per hour while tightening glutes and thighs. Skate fast enough and it's also a low-impact adrenaline release.

What's your favorite weekend activity?
