Road Food

by Valerie Nahmad — September 11, 2007

Fast food isn't all McNuggets and Whoppers. Fitness Magazine serves up a collection of healthy, hasty options miles away from the Golden Arches. Many of the chains are only available in select states, but I'll be looking for them all on my next road trip. Here are a few to whet your appetite:

  • Boneheads (CA, FL, GA) fire grills fresh fish and chicken with spicy South African chiles. Customers choose a fish (think mahi mahi), topping (pineapple salsa), and a side (chilled marinated broccoli).
  • Founded by the CEO of Stonyfield Farm dairy company, O'Naturals (ME, MA, KS) focuses on fresh, organic sandwiches, salads, and soups. All meats are hormone- and antibiotic- free. Veggie udon teriyaki noodles clock in at 326 calories and 4 grams of fat.
  • Billed as "fresh great fast food," EVOS (FL, NV) dishes out healthier versions of traditional fast food. Swap burgers and fries for chicken honey mesquite burgers and baked "airfries."
  • Mexican-themed Moe's Southwest Grill (35 states) woos vegetarians and health-conscious diners with burritos, tacos, quesadillas, and more. Fitness suggests the Pinky Tuscadero salad (183 calories and 12 grams of fat without the taco shell) and the Full Monty fish taco (172 calories and 6 grams of fat).

Got a fast-food favorite to share?

Looking for a little more love on the road? I like Subway, Jamba Juice and Starbucks - they're not over-the-top inventive, but they're consistent, tasty and very diet-friendly.
