Fact vs. Fiction

by Valerie Nahmad — October 9, 2007

Vital Juice Daily tackles gym mythology and separates fact from fiction with celebrity trainer David Kirsch. It's a brief, but sound-byte filled interview. Here are some of the highlights:

  • On proper lunging form--Protect knees by making sure they don't pass toes. "When lunging, put your brain in your butt," says Kirsch. "The focus should be on your glutes, and not your quadriceps or hamstrings."
  • On our fears that lifting makes us bigger--Women have less testosterone than men, so bulking up is difficult. "Heavier weight doesn't necessarily cause a woman to get larger," says Kirsch. "Provided she can handle the weight and repetitions with proper form."
  • On being sore after a workout--A good workout will leave us sore for 1 to 3 days. "It's important for the muscle to be engaged but not incapacitated," says Kirsch. "But be mentally aware of your limits while exercising to prevent injury."
