Staying Motivated

by Cheng-Ling Chen — October 24, 2007

With shorter days and cooler temperatures, I am finding it extra hard to work out. I would much rather stay in bed or curl up with a good book and warm socks. Here are a few things that keep me from total hibernation until the spring:

  • Dressing the part. Even if working out is the last thing I want to do, I change into my workout clothes. I might mull around the house, procrastinating, but if I've gone through the trouble of putting on my sports bra, running shoes, and everything else in between, I am less likely to wimp out. Getting my gear on gets me going.
  • Telling myself it'll just be a quickie. As a runner, I find it hard to keep up my routine during the winter. If I just can't stand the thought of running five miles in the cold, I say: okay, I'll treat myself to an easy two, three mile run today. It's my reward for running at all. More often than not, once I get started, I end up running the five miles anyway. Anyone can apply a similar "treat or trick" to start that walk or get to the gym.
  • Enjoying the great indoors. When it's dreary out, I pick up an indoor fitness activity. Yoga is a good example. Some people stock up on yoga DVDs and practice in the comfort of their homes. Alternatively, others look for a yoga class in the neighborhood. I like camaraderie as I sweat it out and build mind and body strength. Come spring, I know I'll be bouncing back to the outdoor activities tougher than ever.
  • Finding a partner in crime. If I have a friend who is committed to working out with me a couple times a week, I won't let this person down. It's fun to work out together. We keep each other motivated and on track, while gabbing about all the things that make it great to be alive and fit.

I feel terrific after working out. That balance of being simultaneously relaxed and energized can't be beat. Don't believe me? Get out there, do your thing, see for yourself.

These are great tips! Here's another one: find an online support group to tap into if your offline friends aren't around to motivate you. A good one is weightcircles.com!
