Run Girl Run

Running is my fallback. It gets my whole body moving, strengthens my cardiovascular system, and helps me build stamina and confidence. Endorphins kick in quickly when I run, giving me a wonderful natural high. All this, plus it is low maintenance. All I need is a pair of good running shoes and off I go for however long I want.

If you are finding it hard to get to the gym or you can never seem to get around to your other work out activities, go for a short run. Lace up your running shoes and head out. Afterwards, you'll feel energized and terrific about yourself.

Here are a few urban running tips from Fitness Magazine on how to get the most from your run:

  • Run on grass or dirt trails whenever possible to lessen strain on joints. But take care with uneven terrain to prevent ankle injuries.
  • Don't stop. If you hit a red light, turn the corner and keep going to maintain a steady heart rate.
  • Run against traffic so you have clear views of vehicles coming your way.
  • Run in low traffic areas or during low traffic times to avoid breathing poor quality air.

Plus, a few of my own:

  • Get a good pair of running shoes. Try on different brands to find the best fit for you. Find a sports gear store where knowledgeable staff can help steer you in the right direction by asking for your running habits (like trail versus street running) and watching how your feet land when you run (to determine how much you pronate, whether you need a stability shoe or a wide fit).
  • If music motivates you, take it with you. Just make sure to set the volume low enough so you are still fully alert and aware of your surroundings.
  • To get going, join a running club. It's a fun way to exercise and socialize with interesting people you wouldn't otherwise meet.
  • Sign up for a race, could be a 5K or a marathon. Setting a scheduled goal gives you a reason to run and helps you stay motivated.
  • Wear an ID tag with emergency contact on your shoe.
  • Have fun! Feel good about yourself!

And I quote, "Just do it!"

What people are saying...

Excellent advice. It's amazing how in only 20 minutes you feel WAY better than you did before.
