Brain Massage

by Cheng-Ling Chen — December 21, 2007

It may be the season to be jolly, but you've got so much on your mind, you think you might just implode. Well, take a deep breath. Seriously, inhale. Now exhale to these beats: fa-la-la-la-la, la, la, la.

If you can't shut off your brain, try giving yourself a brain massage. Play music you enjoy. Then on your hands and knees, do a few rounds of Cat-Cow Stretches:

  1. Start with neutral spine, back flat like a table top.
  2. On your inhale, arch your spine by lifting your chest and dropping your belly. Lift your head and gaze upwards.
  3. On you exhale, round your spine and contract your belly. Lower your head, neck long and relaxed. Gaze towards your belly.

Synchronizing these movements to your breath will help you warm up your spine. Once you start to loosen up, close your eyes and lower your head to the floor. Using your hands and knees to support your weight, gently massage the tip of your head against the floor. Roll your head from one temple to the other, then forward down to your forehead and back up to the crown of your head. Explore various pressure points as you move your head around. Relax your neck and shoulders. Relax your legs. Let your feet kiss behind you. Wiggle your toes and sway your hips from side to side.

Let go of your thoughts, your worries, and your plans. Let everything go. Take this time for you. Then maybe you will have more to give again.
