Chill Out

by Cheng-Ling Chen — December 17, 2007

Tensions are high during this time of the year. You have a lot to get accomplished before year end, and you are behind on your holiday shopping. Or maybe it isn't you but everybody else's stress that is driving you nuts. If you feel your stress level rising, take a moment. Breathe.

Don't let stress overwhelm you and wear down your body's natural defenses. Stress can lead to a variety of physical symptoms, including:

  • feeling out of it
  • pains and aches all over
  • indigestion
  • increased or loss of appetite
  • insomnia
  • cold and sweaty palms
  • upset stomach
  • decreased sexual desire

Instead, manage your stress with the following:

  • keep a positive attitude
  • take a yoga class or practice relaxation poses on your own
  • exercise regularly and stay active
  • get enough sleep
  • keep a healthy, well-balanced diet
  • lean on your support circle of friends and family
  • speak your mind to assert your feelings rather than stewing on them

If your day is stressing you out, make yourself a cup of herbal tea or go for a walk. Take some time out. Those stressful issues will still be there when you come back, but if you've cleared your head, you will be better equipped to deal with them.
