Don't Be SAD

by Cheng-Ling Chen — December 26, 2007

This is the time of the year when SAD sneaks up on some of us. Seasonal Affective Disorder is a type of mood depressant likely caused by lack of sunlight. SAD comes with the following symptoms:

  • Moodiness or grumpiness
  • Loss of interest in usual activities
  • Cravings for carbs, like bread or pasta
  • Weight gain
  • Sleepiness or low energy

It can be difficult to distinguish SAD from depression as they share many similar symptoms. SAD is diagnosed by determining whether (1) for at least 2 years in a row you have been depressed during the same season and gotten better once the seasons changed, (2) you have a combination of symptoms such as food cravings, weight gain or need for longer sleep, and (3) family history of SAD.

Once diagnosed, SAD can be treated with antidepressants, counseling, and two types of light therapy. Bright light treatment involves sitting in front of a "light box" (a special type of light prescribed by the doctor that is much brighter than a household lamp) for an hour or longer. Alternatively, dawn simulation may be prescribed, in which a dim light goes on in the morning and gets brighter over time.

If you notice that you or someone around you may be feeling down or prone to SAD, here are some suggestions to rid the winter blues:

  • Spend time with loved ones, even if you are feeling withdrawn or quiet
  • Get help with daily tasks
  • Stay active, as exercising can give your body a natural boost
  • Spend time outside and enjoy some sunshine
  • Listen to your body so you know when it's time to speak to your doctor
