If the Shoe Fits...

by WiredBerries Editors — March 3, 2008

Running is a great way to get in shape and stay fit. All you need is a little motivation and a good pair of running shoes. When shopping for a pair, consider these tips:

  • Look for good support and cushioning for your body type and running style (road running, trail running, a combination).
  • A firm midsole will keep your foot properly aligned in a neutral position when your foot lands.
  • Look for specific support if you overpronate, supinate, or remain neutral when your foot lands. You can tell by looking at a running shoe you've been wearing to determine where you fit among these three categories: overpronators wear out the outer heal and ball of the foot first, supinators wear out the outer edge of the heal and the outer edge of the shoe, and neutral runners wear out shoes evenly.
  • To ensure a good fit, buy running shoes at least a half size bigger than your regular dress shoe size (to prevent injuries such as blisters and callousing).
  • Typically, running shoes have a lifespan of 300 to 500 miles, so shoes should be replaced every 6 months or so.
