Are You a Victim of Gear Allure?

by Leslie Aronson — April 21, 2008

One of the first things that drew me to running was, frankly, the gear. Now I know I'm not alone in my superficiality, so I'd best not hear any sighs of judgment out there. It's an easy trap to fall into, and most athletes or wannabe athletes (myself included) have fallen prey to various marketing schemes that covertly (or overtly) imply you need this or that specific gadget in order to be fit or successful in your athletic pursuits.

The truth is quite the opposite - you need very few gadgets or special clothing to be the athlete you've always wanted to be. Some things are undoubtedly necessary, though. When I started running, for example, I bought new running shoes from a specialty store that helped me find shoes that fit the way I run and the way my feet are shaped. And a new sports bra - that was key. Other sports require other protective gear, and of course when you get more serious about a sport, it becomes more likely that you'll need (want) newer, better, perhaps more "pro" equipment. But when you're just starting out, or just being active to be active, you don't need anything fancy - just comfortable clothes, good shoes, and appropriate gear to protect important parts. Unless, of course, you want the fancy stuff, in which case I say, if your bank account can afford it and you won't regret the purchase in 2 months, then go for it. But do not feel like you have to in order to be successful.
