![]() On the Other Hand...by Leslie Aronson — April 22, 2008Despite the content of the previous post, I do think it's important to understand your gear, should you choose to go that route. For instance, what kind of running shoe should you buy? What kind of bike should you look for? Are all yoga mats created equal? Climbing shoes? Should you go for cotton or the ever-popular lycra/spandex combo? Without intentionally copping out on answers to these questions, it's really all a matter of personal preference. Talk to people in your activity of interest and get their recommendations. Utilize the resources around you - talk to the folks at the local outdoor store (and there are so many of them these days) for a variety of wisdom: most offer resources related to a variety of activities from biking, hiking, and running to canoeing, kayaking, and rock climbing. And don't be afraid to get several different opinions - but buyer beware! Check on the return policy before you buy - you don't want to be stuck with an expensive piece of equipment that you won't use or end up not liking. If you seek out specialty shops, you'll be more likely to find sound and honest advice (since, I have found, these people tend to care more about the activity in question than say, your average Target or Walmart employee). Do a little research before you buy - check out Consumer Reports or simply Google the brand or item you want to buy and look for reviews. An informed shopper is a much happier shopper in the long run, so do your homework! Comment on this Post
