Protect Your Assets

by Leslie Aronson — May 29, 2008

Saggy breasts are part of the reality of aging, but there are ways to fight it, especially while you're exercising. While there are no exercises that can specifically fight off inevitable breast sag, wearing a bra that supports you well can delay it for a while (i.e. you're comfortable in whatever activity you're engaging in: for example, your breasts don't hurt while you're running). If you're wondering whether your sports bra has enough support, go to a specialty store and ask to be fitted there. If you just wonder whether your old one has enough support left in it, compare your old one to a new one in the store fitting room - if there's a significant difference in the support level, it's probably time to buy a new one. Smoking is another factor that can contribute to sagging breasts, so if you need yet another reason to quit, there you have it. The elastin in your skin is broken down more quickly if you smoke, thus causing breast sag (and a general loss of skin elasticity and firmness). Weight fluctuations can also cause breast saggage, as the skin and ligaments lose their elasticity faster because they're being stretched more. So crash yo-yo diets, if they weren't a bad idea before, are even worse now. Aging is a reality, but if you protect your ta-tas, you might be able to skip the premature part.
