Superman to the Rescue

by Leslie Aronson — May 18, 2008

Aches and pains can arise with any exercise regimen, especially when doing the same repetitive motions and stressors over and over again. Our backs are often ignored in the general strengthening process - and as a result, can often end up aching, which can inhibit the desire to continue exercise. Developing and maintaining a strong back is an important part of any fitness program (and, of course, a strong back goes hand in hand with strong abs/core). To strengthen your back (and butt) try the superman exercise:

  1. On a yoga mat or carpeted area, lie facedown on the floor with your arms extended overhead, elbows by your ears. Rest your forehead on the floor. If you don't like the squished effect this has on your face, place a towel under your forehead. Adjust your feet so they're about hip- or shoulder-width apart.
  2. Lift your right arm several inches off the floor. At the same time, lift your left leg several inches off the floor. Reach through each limb, making your body as long as possible, and hold for 2 to 3 seconds.
  3. Lower both arm and leg and repeat with the opposite arm and leg to complete one repetition. Continue alternating, doing 2 to 3 sets of 8 to 12 repetitions.
