Living Stress Free?

by WiredBerries Editors — September 14, 2007

There's not doubt about--there's more to do in life than there is time to do it. So how do you refocus, realign, and get back on track during a busy day? These stress-reduction tips should help prevent mishaps and make your life easier:

  • Waiting is unavoidable in life. You can't always plan for it, so make it less stressful by always having something to do stashed in your briefcase or purse. A paperback can make a wait in a post office line almost pleasant!
  • Don't put up with something that doesn't work right whether it's an alarm clock, purse zipper, shoe laces, windshield wipers, or whatever. We get used to the quirks, but if they are wasting time or causing daily frustration, get rid of it or have it repaired.
  • Relax your standards. The world will not end if you don't have the best stats in the office (or at home) on any given day. Do your best, but stressing out over "producing" will only make you less productive AND less likable.
  • Most of us have heard this simple advice, but we still struggle with it. Here's another reminder--say "No." Saying "no" to extra projects, social activities, and invitations you know you don't have the time or energy for takes practice, self-respect, and a belief that everyone, everyday, needs quiet time to relax and be alone. You don't have to be rude about it, but be firm.
  • Create order out of chaos. Organize your home and workspace so that you always know exactly where things are. Put things away where they belong and you won't have to go through the stress of losing things.
  • Talk it out. Discussing your problems with a trusted friend can help clear your mind of confusion so that you can concentrate on problem solving.
  • Every day, do something you really enjoy that is not work related. If you're living to work, it's time to remember to work to live.
  • Eliminate destructive self-talk: "I'm too stupid to" and "I can't remember anything" don't do anything but drag you down.
  • If an especially unpleasant task faces you, train yourself to do it early in the day and get it over with, then the rest of your day will be free of anxiety.
  • Have a forgiving view of events and people. Accept the fact that we live in an imperfect world and that people have flaws. Give others some slack and maybe you'll get some too!
