How to Look Like a Starlet at Big Events

by WiredBerries Editors — December 21, 2007

How do they do it? How do starlets look so drop-dead gorgeous at event after event. It isn't as easy as it looks and most have an arsenal of tricks and a whole team of professionals to pull it off, but here are three strategies that anyone can use without lots of time and money. If you have a "big event" coming up, these should help.

Posture
Your mom was right: stop slouching! Most of us have poor posture and high-heels don't help, but posture is more than just the healthy alignment of the body. It gives subliminal signs about your attitude toward life and yourself. Slouchy posture makes people look apathetic, bored, insecure, depressed, or awkward, whereas standing tall and erect says, "I'm confidant, bring it on." It also emphasizes your chest while tucking in the butt. The thing is that most of us are so used to slouching that we actually feel uncomfortable standing straight with our shoulders slightly back, but just remember that it looks better even if it feels pretentious. The more you practice good posture the more natural it will feel. At your big event, walk around like you are a confident siren and believe it!

Water
The day before a big event, celebrities will drink plenty of water, sometimes with added cranberry juice or lemon for a detox effect and flavor. Being well hydrated plumps your skin and adds a healthy glow. Be sure to cut back a couple hours before the event though, so you aren't forced to make frequent dashes to the restroom. Don't worry about it making you bloated; drinking lots of water actually has a slimming effect. But some people retain water when they eat salty foods, so lay off the potato chips etc, just in case.

Preparation
Plan ahead. Make sure you have flattering clothing picked out in advance that are clean, pressed, and ready to wear at least a couple days ahead of time. It's one less thing you'll have to worry about. Also make sure you know how you want your hair and makeup to look ahead of time. If you have a trusted salon, consider booking a hair styling and make-up session a couple hours before the event. After all, no one can make you look quite like the "experts" can. Either way, knowing what look you're going for and allotting enough time will have you on your way towards walking into the big event with a look that would make even a starlet jealous.
