Negative Calorie Foods: 5 Foods That Won't Make You Fat

by WiredBerries Editors — December 19, 2007

In reality, there may be no such thing as a "negative calorie" food unless your eating cardboard, but for the confirmed snack-o-holic, there are certain foods that the body spends almost as many calories chewing and processing as the calories the food contained in the first place. In other words, you'll be able to eat about as much of these foods as you can handle without fear of packing on pounds:

  • Celery--The veggie tray staple is a famous low-calorie food, but make sure you skip the ranch dressing. The crispy snack is a good replacement for high-fat "crunchy" snacks like potato chips.
  • Oranges--During this time of year, it's easy to have sweet, delicious oranges handy. A typical orange typically contains only 45 calories and is loaded with vitamins and antioxidants. It's a great replacement for when you longing for something sweet but know that another candy bar is a no-go.
  • Grapefruit--Like their orange cousins, big juicy grapefruits are very low calorie and contain nearly 80% of your daily value of potassium.
  • Tomatoes--Tangy red tomatoes are a great way to add extra flavor to sandwiches, salads, and other snacks without adding significant calories. Cut up slices are good solo too.
  • Apples--With only 80 calories per apple, your body has to work a little more to break down this fiber-full snack compared with many other fruity options.

But just remember that not all fat is bad. The brain and body need healthy fats to survive. Some of the healthiest sources of "good" fats are nuts, fish, olive oil, flax oils, and rich produce like avocados.
