Funny-Looking Moles

by WiredBerries Editors — January 29, 2008

Trust yourself when you find a mole or skin discoloration that just looks "odd" or "different" and get it checked by your dermatologist. According to researchers at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City, melanoma may look noticeably different -- like "ugly ducklings," in fact -- compared with other irregular skin moles that are benign. In a study published in the January issue of Archives of Dermatology, 85 percent of participants were able to identify malignant melanoma lesions simply by looking at pictures. "These preliminary findings suggest that the ugly duckling sign may prove to be a useful screening strategy for primary health care providers and even for skin self-examination," the researchers concluded.

What people are saying...

Yes, but don't rely on a melanoma mole looking ugly. I went for a checkup with my dermatologisty many years ago, not with any suspicions but to have a sunspot removed. Even though she didn't suspect anything either, she took biopsies of a few moles, and one of them tested positive for melanome. Two weeks later I had surgery. If by chance, I hadn't gone to her, and she hadn't been enough on the ball to test even an innocent looking mole, I would be dead now. Anyone who has moles and/or has spent alot of time in the sun or had sunburns as a kid, should see a dermatologist annually. And make sure he/she is thorough, and checks every part of you - including your scalp and between your toes. Later, I also had a melanoma between my toes. People think they develop where you have been most exposed. But they don't. In women, it's most often on the legs and in men on the torso. But don't sit around and wait for an ugly one, please.
