The Scent of Relaxation

by WiredBerries Editors — January 30, 2008

For centuries, scent has been used as a way to influence well-being and state of mind. I love the idea of using scent to invigorate and relax, induce sleep or hunger, but in a quest for essential oils to do some aromatherapy experimentation, I realized that I didn't know what relaxation smells like. The following list offers an overview of some of the most popular scents and their associated effects:

  • Lavender -- Stress reliever; calming, soothing, relaxing; promotes peace and well-being; also thought to aide with headaches, menstrual pain, and nausea.
  • Rosemary -- Stimulates and invigorates the whole body. Thought to relieve gas and indigestion and even fight off illnesses, such as the flu.
  • Chamomile - Promotes sleep, relaxation, and meditation.
  • Peppermint - An energizer; combats fatigue and muscle aches and paints; relieves pain and stimulates the liver; it can also aid in bronchitis and motion sickness.
  • Sandalwood -- Promotes relaxation and spiritual harmony; it can also help with dry hair and skin.
  • Lemon - An energizer and disinfectant; it also has natural bleaching qualities.
  • Nutmeg - Aides with sleep and indigestion.
  • Hyssop - Healer that helps with cold and flu; it can also be used as a skin-improving agent.
  • Jasmine -- Relaxing and soothing; sometimes used as an aphrodisiac.
  • Basil -- Helps with concentration as well as health conditions such as upset stomach, headaches, and flatulence.
  • Eucalyptus -- Powerful decongestant; antiseptic; helps with cold symptoms.
  • Ginger - An energizer; widely used to help with nausea.
  • Rose - The different varieties offer different healing properties; rose is known for its soothing and calming abilities; it can also help with various skin problems.
