Tai One On

by WiredBerries Editors — March 21, 2008

A few years ago, I agreed to take a Tai Chi class with my parents. As I predicted, I was the youngest one in the class by a few decades. Sure that I would be bored by the slow-moving class, I picked a spot in the back so that I could drift out if need be. To my great surprise, I was so enthralled and captivated that I arrived early at the next class to ensure a place near the front where I could see the instructor and get help with my flowing poses. If you have not yet had a chance to try this ancient martial art, consider the health benefits offered by the International Taoist Tai Chi Society:

  • Tai Chi is a moderate cardiovascular training exercise, which also has a significant effect on lung function.
  • Tai Chi can beneficially alter the lipid profile, raising the possibility that practicing Tai Chi might be favorable in the prevention of atherosclerosis.
  • Tai Chi is one of the few exercises that is appropriate for virtually any person regardless of their condition - it can even be done in a chair or bed. It has also been shown to improve the activities of daily living for people with rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis - to name a few.
  • Tai Chi helps regulate the immune system.
  • Tai Chi helps postural alignment and helps reduce spinal degeneration.
  • Tai Chi is a weight bearing exercise, which raises the possibility of benefits for maintaining bone density.

And, if you're in doubt, go watch a Tai Chi session in a local park. The beauty of the practice will inspire you to join!
