Happy April Fools!

by Maria F. Aldana — April 1, 2008

The origin of this day, which is also known as "All Fools Day," is still uncertain. It is known that April Fools Day began around 1582 in France with the reform of the calendar under Charles IX. The Gregorian calendar was introduced, and New Year's Day was moved from somewhere between March 25 and April 1 to January 1st. Since communication was tedious during those days, many continued to celebrate New Year's on April 1st. These people were seen as "fools;" they were sent on a "fool's errand" and made to believe things that were not true. Fact or theory, the tradition has spread throughout Europe and the United States over the centuries and is now observed on modern calendars.
