Keep the Good Ones Close

by Maria F. Aldana — April 7, 2008

Friends come and go throughout the years. The closest ones are those you can call at two in the morning, rant your mind off, and act as silly as can be. My two closest friends are in London and Los Angeles. Although they are thousands of miles away, we take time out of our busy schedules to catch up over the phone. You can tell the good ones because you stay close despite the distance.

We all have "friends" who live 15 minutes away and you still don't seem to have time to catch up for happy hour after 6 months of trying to plan a quick date. Maybe its a sign to move on because you don't have anything in common anymore. Janet Porter, British author of Life's Too F***ing Short, gives some humorous tips on editing out your friends so that you can focus on the good ones.
Edit out:

  • The worthies
  • The bores
  • The dreary school friends who married grey people
  • Your mum's neighbor from when you were a kid
  • That nice man you once slept with out of pity

She believes that real friends are "the people who aren't impressed by you, and are prepared to tell you things that no one else would have the cheek to say."
