Smart Snacking at Work: Salty Foods

by Molly Niendorf — August 27, 2008

You've been packing healthy snacks to take to the office, sticking to fruits and veggies, but sometimes you crave a salty snack. Why deprive yourself? Deprivation, as we all know, often leads to a breakdown. You've told yourself to choose snacks other than chips, but pretty soon you buckle and gravitate towards the bag of Salt 'n Vinegar. One serving of these chips contains more than 150 calories and 10 grams of fat. There are plenty of other crunchy snacks that'll satisfy your craving. Try these; nutritional values are per serving (I found all of these at my neighborhood grocery store):

  • Simply Naked Pita Chips (130 calories, 4g fat, 3g dietary fiber)
  • Pirate's Booty (in a variety of flavors, 70 calories, 3g fat)
  • TLC Country Cheddar Crackers (18 crackers: 130 calories, 4.5g fat)
  • Snyder's Multigrain Pretzel Twists (120 calories, 2g fat)
  • Quaker Buttered Popcorn Rice Cakes (one cake: 35 calories, 0g fat)
  • 100 Calorie Pack: Veggie Crisps (100 calories, 5g fat)
  • Wheat and Flax Crackers (9 crackers: 70 calories, 1g fat)
  • Health Valley Wheat Brushetta Vegetable Crackers (5 crackers: 50 calories, 0g fat)
If you're craving a bit more substance, all of the above can be eaten with hummus, peanut or almond butter, or salsa. Your body will thank you for satisfying the salty craving without sabotaging your healthy eating.
