Lower Premiums to Veg Heads

by WiredBerries Editors — September 25, 2007

According to Finance Markets, the UK's biggest independent financial news portal, a new life insurance policy has been introduced that offers lower premiums to vegetarians. People who do not eat meet will be eligible for a 6% discount on life cover from Animal Friends Insurance due to medical evidence suggesting they are less likely to suffer from major illnesses than those who eat meat.

The policy, which is underwritten by insurer Liverpool Victoria, is also on offer to meat-eaters, but with no discount. A spokesperson for Animal Friends Insurance commented that the risk of vegetarians suffering from some cancers is reduced by up to 40% and from heart disease by up to 30%, but in spite of this, they still have to pay the same life insurance premiums as meat-eaters. Animal Friends believes this is unfair and that the life insurance industry must acknowledge this fact.
