![]() It's Not the End of the World?by WiredBerries Editors — October 5, 2007According to a recent report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), says that climate change "can be tackled." According to an article about the report on BBC News, the growth in greenhouse gas emissions can be curbed at reasonable cost. "Boosting renewable energy, reducing deforestation and improving energy efficiency can all help," stated the report. "Human society as a whole has to look for changes in consumption patterns," IPCC chair Rajendra Pachauri told reporters at a news conference in Bangkok. The report suggests that if major climate impacts are to be avoided, global emissions should peak and begin declining within one or two decades. Greenhouse gas emissions have risen by 70% since 1970, and will rise by between 25% and 90% over the next 25 years under "business as usual." That rise will mainly be caused by an expansion in the use of fossil fuels, which are set to continue as the world's dominant energy source. The report assesses the likely costs to the global economy of stabilizing greenhouse gases at various concentrations in the atmosphere. Stabilization at reasonable cost is possible, it concludes. But we don't have infinite time to make changes. Said Dr. Pachauri, "We have a very short window for turning around the trend we have in rising greenhouse gas emissions. We don't have the luxury of time." So start making little changes today!
What people are saying...
Regardless of the exact mechanism (fossil fuels and cow burps seems to be the latest culprits), you'd have to be deaf and blind to deny something odd is happening to the weather given the abundance of news reports on the subject. After listening to arguments such as Mr Vice President Gore's movie who would not be highly alarmed about shrinking polar ice caps, extended northern summers, catastrophic storms and rising sea levels? The stories are now so frequent they no longer hold much shock value. The earth's weather is proven to be highly changeable - running the gamut of ice ages to droughts - long before humans came along. Many new studies, regrettably seldom reported by the same doomsday media have shown that the basis of the Greenhouse alarmism is incorrect. Greenhouse gasses which have been produced by human activities (anthropogenic) are a tiny, almost insignificant component to the equation. In any event the main accused, carbon dioxide, does not cause rising global temperatures at the rates predicted by most greenhouse alarmists and this has been argued in many recent scientific studies. Let's have a rethink. The main contributor to our temperature is the sun. Primary causes of climate cycles measured over the last half million years include cyclical eccentricities in earth's rotation and orbit, as well as variations in the sun's energy output. Secondary greenhouse effects stemming from changes in the ability of a warming atmosphere to support greater concentrations of gases like water vapour, methane and carbon dioxide play a significant but very minor role. Of all of earth's greenhouse gases, water vapour is by far the dominant player. Our politicians should be addressing issues of living with climate change - the mechanics are beyond our control.
