Those Are Sweet Jeans!

by Maria F. Aldana — March 27, 2008

Is organic denim a new thing? Although eco-friendly denim is popping up every where, it's nothing new. A Japanese company called Sugar Cane has been producing strong denim made from sugar cane fibers and has been salvaging denim for more than 20 years.

Paul Morarji, Sugar Cane's brand director states "We have always offered organic denim, ever since we started producing jeans in 1975, the cotton and the sugarcane we produce are not treated with any chemicals and are 100 percent organically grown in Japan and Hawaii. The indigo we use is 100 percent pure indigo, which we have developed to dye our denim using traditional Japanese dyeing techniques, by hand. Our textile experts were the first in the world to produce a selvage denim fabric made from woven cotton yarns and sugarcane fibers way back in the mid-'70s." This brand is gaining popularity outside of Japan and is now being distributed all over the world.
