Greening Up Your Sex Life

by Andrea Millar — April 4, 2008

Are you eco-aware? Would you say that concerns for the environment affect a significant portion of your decisions morning, noon, and night? If sex comprises any part of your regularly scheduled programming, it makes sense to consider it in the same green terms you would dinner choices. Or, then again, if sex isn't a big part of your life, maybe greening it up will be just the attention it needs to grow. I speak rhetorically here, of course.

Anyway, treehugger.com has a great spread on ways to increase your enjoyment the natural way. The earth is a very sexy place, after all. The first tip is one you may not have considered, which cautions against purchasing toys with the "for novelty use only" disclaimer. You may have just thought the manufacturers were being coy, but it may be an intentional way of masking the presence of pththlates, a plastics softener that has raised questions of toxicity and is now banned in the EU. They also feature great advice about birth control options and even where to meet a partner who shares your worries for the planet. Yeah, I know, you'd think that'd be everyone--maybe I should counter treehugger here and tell you to use your wiles to bring these other people on board.

Another great tip? Never, no matter how tempting, toss that condom (even if it's vegan) in the toilet with the rest of the biodegradable crowd. You know better than that.
