Going Nuclear

by Andrea Millar — May 10, 2008

One thing that still makes me giggle is when somebody goes on teevee, and actually discusses the nuk'lar option. First tip guys: don't try and convince the snobby green twenty-something that nuclear is the way to go by mispronouncing it. The second tip: realize in advance that watchdog sites like treehugger.com are keeping an eye out for any dealings that may be shady. Tip number 3: Refusing to disclose the price of a new nuclear plant to voters is shady stuff.

In South Carolina, unfortunately, the above seems to have occurred. Gosh, remember nuclear energy? There are many plants still in operation across the U.S. Here in California where I write from, there is currently a prohibition on any new construction of nuclear power plants, until we get the disposal issue under control. Until then, California Energy's Web site states that there are plenty of gently used plants available in a shutdown but not decommissioned state (we're gonna figure out this disposal thing real soon though). See, that's the thing with that nuclear power...it's green until it really, really isn't, creating some of the more toxic stuff known to man. Not exactly something you want in your neighborhood. If you live outside of California, check out the laws regarding construction of new power plants, unless you think figuring out figures to convey just how toxic something is to beings thousands of years down the line is fun. By that time, Chernobyl should be more or less back to normal.
