Sweet Green Charity, Part 2

by Katie Ryder — August 26, 2008

When I got married about four months ago, I wanted the entire ordeal to be as green as possible. Organic food, local flowers, the centerpieces were pots of tulips and daisies grown in my mom's own backyard. We even got married during the day so we wouldn't have to turn on any lights.

After the wedding, I was torn about what to do with my dress. I'm not a sentimental person and the last thing I want to do is force my future daughter to wear my dress. Because no matter how amazing and timeless I think it is now, in 30 years it will be as dated and tacky as polyester suits and shoulder pads.

So it was down to selling it or donating it. I already know I could sell it on EBay or Craigslist, but the thought of donating weighed a bit heavier than selling it. Everyone needs good karma right? So I found an organization called Brides Against Breast Cancer. This organization takes donated wedding dresses, sells them off at affordable prices, and uses the money made to grant the wishes of people losing their battle with breast cancer. One woman's wish was to visit Colorado. The organization not only flew her to Colorado with money made, but paid for her and her family to raft the Colorado River, stay at a hot springs, and experience things that are uniquely Colorado such as wagon rides in the mountains and alpine slides. This is a great way to recycle your wedding dress and allow someone to reuse it, all for a good cause.
