10 Essential Picnic Items

by Laura Donnelly — August 30, 2007

Here is the ultimate Picnic Item list:

  1. Insulated canvas boat’n’tote bag. This is just like those monogrammed canvas bags that every sailor uses. Except the inside is waterproof with a thick padding to keep food cool. Or just use a cooler.
  2. Corkscrew and bottle opener. I know this is an obvious one, but how many times has someone forgotten this essential item?
  3. First Aid Kit. You know, just some bug spray and Handi-Wipes.
  4. For bottles of wine, sparkling water, or soda, bring along those rubberized bottle holders made out of surfers’ wetsuit material.
  5. Salt and pepper.
  6. A garbage bag or two.
  7. A big quilt, shower curtain, or old bed sheet for protecting food (and people) from sand and other pests.
  8. Good-looking RECYCLABLE plastic glasses, plates, and festive napkins.
  9. A sturdy Ziploc bag with extra ice (the ice buckets tend to get dirty).
  10. Prosecco!
