Southside Cocktail

by Laura Donnelly — August 1, 2007

The Southside is a country club cocktail that became famous during Prohibition. Lemonade was used to disguise the strong taste of bootleg gin. Try this refreshing summer drink recipe. Some people even puree the mint with the ice to make a wicked lemonade smoothie!

Makes 4

2 cups lemon or limeade (preferably homemade)
4 to 6 oz. Mount Gay rum (or vodka or gin if preferred)
1/2 cup fresh spearmint leaves, plus 4 extra sprigs for garnish
Ice

Macerate the mint leaves with the lemonade. Add rum to taste, then shake with ice and serve garnished with mint leaves.

This recipe is, of course, also delicious served as a virgin cocktail with a splash of club soda!
