Tips for Easy Picnics

by Laura Donnelly — August 28, 2007

Remember to try to make dishes without meat, seafood, or mayonnaise if you don’t have a cooler or ice chest. Certain cheeses, sausages, breads, dips, and fruit are fine sitting out for a few hours without refrigeration.

Feel free to use store-bought items as shortcuts. Buy already made hummus and doctor it up with extra lemon juice, ground cumin, and a few drops of extra virgin olive oil. Toast your pita bread triangles the day before your picnic and store them in airtight containers. Same goes for cookies or brownies. Cook and pack ahead! Also, buy already cut-up fruit pieces or fruit salad from your favorite gourmet take-out. My local market sells crudite platters with a very good dill dipping sauce. A carefree contribution to your picnic!

Got any tips for a fun and easy picnic?
