Where Do You Find the Ripest Fruit?

by Laura Donnelly — August 9, 2007

The best way to find the freshest fruits and vegetables is to seek out the highest-quality farm stand or gourmet market in your area and befriend the owners and/or managers. Become a regular customer and ask their advice about what is freshest and in season. Tell them how you want to prepare the produce. If you're making the peach salsa recipe from Monday, you won't need the best ripest peaches, but for Bellinis, you will want the best. If you are unfortunate enough to get a bum peach or melon or whatever, don't be embarrassed to tell them. Bring it back and show them. A good vendor will appreciate knowing. Perhaps it was stored incorrectly or not handled well.

Got any tips for where to find the ripest fruit?

What people are saying...

Best to seek out sources of fruit in your neighbor's backyards.

Anyone with a peach, apricot or plum tree in their yard is fairly inundated with fruit during harvest time and would generally welcome any help in getting rid of the excess.
