Three Items Needed for a Well-Stocked Freezer

by Laura Donnelly — September 26, 2007

The healthy well-stocked freezer--here are three items to help you in a pinch:

  • Edamame--Those great soybean snacks we love to get at our favorite sushi restaurant. Keep some bags in your freezer for a fast high-protein no fat snack or appetizer. Kids love them, too!
  • Frozen fruit--Have frozen strawberries, blueberries, and peeled bananas in your freezer at all times for a quick smoothie. Combine with rice or soy milk, ice cubes, and a dash of vanilla.
  • Frozen pizza--This is not necessarily junk food. Find a gourmet brand like California Pizza Kitchen or Wolfgang Puck and add more toppings yourself, such as red onions, broccoli raab, sliced mushrooms, and goat cheese.

What people are saying...

The title is very misleading unless you are making a joke because the things included in this list could hardly be considered staples.

I use my freezer to store foods I have prepared in bulk for future meals or to store basic ingredients like meat, poultry, or fish. Sometimes I will soak and cook a large quantity of dried beans and store them in one or two cup amounts to be used later. I also blanch vegetables from my garden, freeze them loose on a cookie sheet and pack them into zipper bags for freezer storage.

The freezer is also great for storing bread and as I make all my own I am never without bread. I tend to bake it a hair less than necessary because I generally toast it after defrosting it in the microwave for 30 seconds or so. It comes out just like fresh baked.

Prepared frozen foods are not generally very nutritous compared with their homemade equivalents. If you want frozen pizza then make some and freeze part of the yield.
