Essential Tools for Successful Soups

by Laura Donnelly — October 9, 2007

Here are some essential tools for successful soup making. Every kitchen should have these items!

  • If you're only going to have one soup pot, a 4 qt. size is probably best. It should have a heavy bottom, like copper if possible. Aluminum pots are good although they will stain if used for tomatoes or artichokes. Your best bet is a high-quality stainless steel with a lid.
  • Blender, food processor, or immersion blender. Hopefully, you already have one of these. Don't forget to let the soup cool before you blend or process! Immersion blenders are smaller handheld mixers that you put directly into soup pot. They are convenient and easier to clean than a whole food processor.
  • Soup ladle. A lot of people don't own these anymore, but they are perfect for scooping up just the right amount of soup ingredients and soup together. Get an attractive one so it can be used at the table at serving time.
