![]() Learning Spa-Sized Portionsby Laura Donnelly — October 2, 2007It's not particularly interesting or fun to have to pay attention to portion control, but investing in a small weight scale will teach you a lot about portion size. It is now recommended that we eat only a small amount (3 to 4 ounces) of meat per meal. You will be surprised (and will become well educated) about weights and sizes when you use a scale. American restaurant portions are far too big and sadly we have been influenced by that. The same goes for butchers and fishmongers. When you tell them how many people you are feeding, they will always try to sell you larger amounts. I usually tell them I have one less guest than I actually have, or tell them I only want 4 ounces per serving. So invest in a little scale, and learn how "spa sized" portions can help you lose weight.
What people are saying...
Once you get in the habit of using a scale you will be surprised at how useful it becomes and not just for portion control with an eye to weight loss. There are lots of recipes which call for amounts that are measured by weight--this seems to be especially true for baked goods. I grow a good deal of my own vegetables, get produce from friends with orchards and like to have home-made convenience foods in my freezer so I use the scale to measure out equal portions of things I freeze. Plus, I LIKE to know that I grew 20 lbs. of shell peas or 50 lbs. of potatoes and so on (of course, I use the bathroom scale to weigh things that heavy.) Comment on this Post
