Tightening the Knot

Alicia Adams of Marysville, OH, has a simple trick to keep your children’s shoelaces tied together longer. “Just spritz them with water before you tie them,” she writes. “The fibers swell and tighten the knots.”

Good Common Scents

“My grandmother’s house always smells wonderful,” says Jillian Downer of New York, NY. “Even receiving a care package or a birthday gift in the mail releases that amazing country-home scent that seems to stick to everything. On my last visit with her, I decided to do some investigating to find out why and discovered a very simple solution. Tucked away in the most random places were bars of Ivory soap and sachets of pine needles—everywhere from couch cushions to dresser drawers, to the bottom of the hamper to the passenger’s seat of the car. My nose doesn’t lie—this trick really works!”

No-Slip Grip for Cutting Boards

If your cutting boards constantly slide around the counter as you chop and knead, try this tip from Josie Aaronson-Gelb of Chicago, IL. “Wet a dish rag and squeeze out the excess water. Fold the rag in half for a small cutting board and place it directly on the counter; then put the board on top, and you’ve got a no-budge work surface for all your dicing, slicing, and baking needs.” Other WB members say a couple of dampened paper towels will work just as well.

Happy Thanksgiving!

No doubt you may be facing a sink full of pots and pans, some with impossible burnt gunk all over the bottom. Tracy Evans of Birmingham, AL, has this solution for hard-to-clean cookware: “Place the dish or pan in the sink and add about one teaspoon of dishwasher detergent (like Cascade). Fill the pan with hot water, let it sit overnight, and then use a sponge to clean. Works great for me every time.”

Strawberry-Apple Smoothie

Our smoothie of the week weighs in at about 135 calories per glass, and so is a good way to start your post-holiday diet.

1 cup strawberry low-fat yogurt
1 bag (6 ounces) frozen strawberries
1 apple, peeled, cored, and cut up
1 tablespoon of sugar or honey
1 cup ice cubes

Blend the first four ingredients in a food process or blender, and then add the cubes one at a time. Makes three servings.
