No More Crying Over Chopped Onion

by WiredBerries Readers — February 12, 2007

A friend likes to wear swimmer's goggles when he chops onions, but Anita McKenzie has a few other suggestions for avoiding tears. These are the ones that work for her:

Refrigerate the onion for about an hour before chopping
Peel the onion under cold water
Hold a teaspoon in your mouth while chopping
Use a very sharp knife and start cutting away from the root (crushing an onion is what releases the sulfur compound that makes you cry)
Chew on a piece of onion or a stick of gum
